If you are thinking of getting Botox or fillers, you probably have some questions about cosmetic injections. This is your guide to cosmetic injections, what they do, and where you can find them.

Neurotoxins

While Botox is often used interchangeably, this is actually a brand name for a specific neurotoxin. Currently there are five FDA approved neurotoxin on the market in the U.S. These include Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, and the newest member, Daxxify.

Neurotoxins impact the nerve endings in muscles to prevent them from contracting. These cosmetic injections treat wrinkles caused by muscles that are hyper mobile. Typically, this includes frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. However, there are many off label uses for these neurotoxins as well. Results last a few months, and the procedure is very simple.

Dermal Fillers

Fillers are a bit more complicated than Botox. Generally, fillers are composed of products that add volume or structure to the contours of the face. These injections lift sagging skin, smooth out fine lines and restore lost volume. Results last between 12-18 months, with some lasting as long as 24 months.

Types of Fillers

There are many types of dermal fillers. They have different ingredients and work in different ways. Therefore, some fillers work better in certain areas of the face. The different types include:

  • HA Fillers. Hyaluronic Acid fillers are the most popular fillers on the market. They create a soft, natural texture and youthful results. Results last between 6-12 months. Brand names include Juvéderm, RHA fillers, and Restylane.
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers. CaHA fillers are thicker than HA and have more lift capacity. This filler also boosts collagen production. Brand name: Radiesse.
  • Poly-L-lactic Acid Filler. Works well for smile lines, nasolabial folds, and chin wrinkles. This filler is also a biostimulator, so it stimulates collagen production. Brand name: Sculptra.
  • PMMA filler contains a resorb-able microbead suspended in gel. It creates volume first and then leaves a structure for collagen formation. Great for smile lines, nasolabial folds, and acne scars. Brand name: Bellafill.
