Strengthen Your Leg Veins

Our arteries and veins don’t often get the credit that they deserve for being the lifelines between our heart and the rest of the body. When in fact, their role of transporting blood to organs and returning it to the heart is essential to our existence.

However, due to obesity, increasing age, genetics, hormonal changes, and a sedentary lifestyle, vein function can become impaired and affect overall health. In fact, 20 percent of Americans suffer from varicose veins or another form of vein disease.

Fortunately, there are steps that patients can take to improve the vitality of veins.

Here are four ways to strengthen the veins in your legs.

1. Elevate Your Legs

Whether you work long hours at a desk job or have a profession, such as nursing, where you spend a lot of the time on your feet, it’s important to take at least 15 minutes every day to elevate your legs.

In doing so, you alleviate pressure, strengthen leg veins, and make it easier for them to carry blood back to the heart.

2. Engage in Regular Exercise

Regular exercise can do wonders for vein health, as it promotes increased circulation in the legs.

Even light walking is an excellent way to activate calf muscles and keep blood efficiently moving. More intense workouts like bicycling, weightlifting, yoga, Pilates, and running can make the veins in your legs even stronger.

3. Wear Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are medical-grade garments that are worn to push blood away from calves and up towards the heart. The light pressure that they apply can also improve the appearance of varicose veins, decrease swelling in legs and lower extremities, and prevent vein disease.

Additionally, compression stockings are particularly beneficial when traveling as leg veins are more likely to become enlarged during this time.

4. Seek Treatment From a Vein Specialist

For the most effective ways to strengthen the veins in your legs, it’s best to talk with a vein specialist. He or she has the training, education, and experience to assess your veins and use advanced diagnostic tools when necessary.

If an issue or underlying medical condition is detected, a vein specialist can provide you thorough guidance and recommendations for treatment, including many non-invasive options.
