DVT Guide | Understanding Deep Vein Thrombosis

DVT, or deep vein thrombosis can be a serious medical condition. DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually in the lower extremities. This can cause pain and swelling, or more serious complications. Here’s what you should know about DVT.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

This condition can be serious. Blood clots can break loose and travel through the blood stream. Then, they can get stuck in the lungs and block blood flow.

Symptoms of DVT

Deep vein thrombosis symptoms include:

  • Leg swelling
  • Leg pain
  • Cramping or soreness in the leg
  • Changes in skin color on the leg, such as a red or purple color
  • Warm sensation on the affected leg

However, its important to note that DVT can occur with no noticeable symptoms.

Doctor for DVT

If you have symptoms of DVT, it’s important to speak to your doctor. If you have symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain or rapid breathing, seek emergency medical attention immediately. This could be a sign that the blood clot has traveled to your lungs, also know as a pulmonary embolism.

What Causes DVT?

Anything that inhibits proper blood flow, or proper clotting can cause a blood clot. The main causes of deep vein thrombosis are damage to the vein or inflammation due to injury or infection.

Your vein specialist will do a physical exam and ask questions about your symptoms. He/she will also look for swelling, tenderness, or skin color changes in the legs. There are a few tests that your provider might use. These include:

  • Duplex Ultrasound
  • D-dimer Blood Test
  • Venography
  • MRI Scans

Treating DVT

The three main goals of DVT treatment are to prevent the clot from getting larger, prevent the clot from breaking loose and reduce the changes of another DVT. Treatment options involve:

  • Blood thinners
  • Clot busters (thrombolytics)
  • Filters placed in the vena cava
