If you are struggling with tired, achy legs, you may be wondering exactly what causes heaviness in legs. While feeling heavy legs after a workout is normal, legs that feel heavy or weighed down for no reason may be a sign of a venous condition. There are many conditions that could cause this symptom, so let’s look at the most causes of heaviness in legs.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are veins that appear large, blueish purple, bulging and sometimes knotted. These veins are caused by weak or damaged valves in the blood vessels. This allows blood to pool in the legs and leads to issues like blood clots, swelling, pain, and sores that won’t heal.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome often causes an uncontrollable jittery, shaky, or numb feeling in the legs. Often, the temporary solution is to move them. Many people shake their legs or tap their feet to try and relieve the sensation, which is where the syndrome gets its name.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency causes of heaviness in legs

CVI is another cause of heaviness in legs. The pressure of gravity makes the heart work harder to pump blood back from the feet and legs. In fact, there is a series of one-way valves that keep blood from falling back down. In patients with CVI, these valves become weak and cause issues such as tired, heavy legs, swelling, pain, and spider or varicose veins.

Peripheral Arterial Disease

PAD, or peripheral arterial disease, is a type of cardiovascular disease. It affects the veins and arteries. When fat builds up in the walls of the arteries, it makes it difficult for blood to pass through. This is when symptoms begin to appear.

PAD is common in the legs, where it can partially cut off circulation to the feet and legs, causing them to ache, feel heavy, or cramp.
