Thyroid Surgery Maryland

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the base of the neck that secretes hormones to regulate growth and development. When thyroid function is compromised due to disease or damage, thyroid surgery in Maryland may be recommended.

What is Thyroid Surgery?

This is a surgical procedure which seeks to remove a thyroid nodule and all or part of the thyroid.

Why is Surgery Performed?

Once a patient has been diagnosed with a thyroid nodule, the next step is a fine needle aspiration.

Treatment may be recommended if biopsy results indicate thyroid or papillary cancer, possible cancer/atypical findings, or risk of malignancy as evidenced by molecular marker testing.

Surgical procedures are also an option for large non-cancerous thyroid nodules (greater than 1.5 cm) that are causing discomfort, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), shortness of breath, hoarseness, or other symptoms.

Additionally, thyroid surgery in Maryland may be necessary for patients with hyperthyroidism/Grave’s Disease.

What Can Patients Expect From Thyroid Surgery?

Dr. Yash Kumar performs surgery in our outpatient surgical center. In most cases, the procedure takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and patients are able to return home after a short period of post-op recovery.

Treatment may be completed as an open or laparoscopic (minimally-invasive) procedure.

When a laparoscopic approach is used, small incisions are made in the neck to allow insertion of a miniaturized camera and surgical instruments. These tools allow the nodule and part or all of the thyroid to be excised with minimal damage to surrounding tissue. Laparoscopic surgery also allows for a shorter recovery.

If you are not a good candidate for this technique, then an open approach will be used.

In any event, Dr. Kumar will carefully assess your case and develop a customized surgical plan.
