Sclerotherapy Bel Air – Varicose Vein Treatment

This minimally invasive treatment is a great way to address spider veins and varicose veins. The Vein Center of Maryland offers sclerotherapy in Bel Air and our other convenient locations in Westminster, Baltimore, Eldersburg, Hunt Valley, and Ellicott City.

What is Sclerotherapy?

sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a chemical solution that irritates the blood vessel. It causes the vein to expand, stick together and form a scar. This closes the vein off and makes it look and feel better. The solution is injected directly into the varicose or spider vein.

Uses of Sclerotherapy in Bel Air

While it works great for many people, sclerotherapy isn’t right for everyone. You will meet with your provider and discuss whether you qualify for this treatment. The following people are not eligible for sclerotherapy:

  • People with active deep vein thrombosis or superficial vein thrombosis
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding people

During The Treatment

Sclerotherapy is an office treatment. It normally takes around 30-45 minutes, and your provider may use an ultrasound machine for more accuracy. During the procedure you will lie on your back or stomach, depending on the treatment area, and relax while the provider completes the injection.

There are several chemicals available for sclerotherapy so the provider will choose the one best for you. He will clean the treatment area, and inject the liquid, or foam, solution into the blood vessel. You may experience a tiny pinch or a mild burning feeling. Lastly, depending on the size of the veins,  the provider may be able to treat several in one visit.

After your treatment, you should wear compression stockings for 3-7 days. This helps compress the treated vessels. You can go back to your normal activities, but you do need to avoid direct exposure to sun, including tanning beds.
