What is a Hernia?
Hernia occurs when an organ protrudes through a hole or weakness in the muscular wall or connective tissue that holds it in place. While hernias are usually not life-threatening, they often require medical intervention and will not resolve on their own.
Hernia Types
The most common type of hernia is an inguinal hernia. It accounts for 70% of hernias and is the result of intestines pushing through the abdominal wall.
A hiatal hernia is when the stomach squeezes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. Individuals who are 50 or older are at an increased risk for this variety of hernia.
An umbilical hernia presents in children that are less than 6 months old and occurs when intestines protrude through the belly button. This is the only type of hernia that can resolve on its own as the infant’s muscles get stronger.
Hernia Repair and Other Treatment Options
Treatment is usually dictated by the size and severity of the hernia. While dietary changes, exercise, and over-the-counter medications, such as antacid, H-2 receptor blockers, and proton pump inhibitors, can help alleviate hernia symptoms, they are not corrective.
In many cases, hernias require surgical repair to eliminate pain and avoid further complications.
Dr. Yash Kumar performs hernia surgery in our outpatient surgical center in Maryland, using an open or laparoscopic approach. During the procedure, surgical mesh is applied to the weakened area or opening to seal it and reposition the protruding tissue or organ.
While laparoscopic hernia repair involves very small incisions, minimizes damage to surrounding tissue, and requires minimal recovery, not everyone is a candidate for this technique. Dr. Kumar will carefully assess your case and develop a customized plan for your hernia surgery.
