Does Being Overweight Actually Cause Varicose Veins?

If you’re overweight and varicose veins show up, it’s tempting to blame the extra pounds you know you need to lose. And while that certainly may be a good reason to kick start that diet, it may not be the cause for your varicose veins.

Carrying excess weight can increase pressure on the veins in your legs and is considered a risk factor for developing vein problems. But plenty of people at healthy weights develop varicose veins, too.

The truth is that there is more happening beneath the surface.

Why Being Overweight Can Put More Pressure on Your Veins

Your leg veins work very hard all day long pumping blood back up to your heart, against gravity.

Small valves inside those veins help keep blood moving in the right direction. But when valves get weal or stop closing properly, blood can begin pooling in the legs. That pressure may cause veins to stretch, enlarge, and become varicose.

Extra weight just adds pressure to your system, making it harder for blood to return efficiently from the legs. This all contributes to chronic venous insufficiency.

Weight, however, is only one piece of the puzzle.

Does Being Overweight Actually Cause Varicose Veins by Itself?

No single risk factor explains every case.

Genetics can play a major role. If varicose veins seem to be something of a family tradition, your own risk may be higher.

Age matters because vein walls and valves can weaken over time. Pregnancy increases blood volume and places additional pressure on veins in the pelvis and legs. Spending long stretches sitting or standing can also make it more difficult for blood to move efficiently out of the lower legs.

That’s why two people with similar body weights can have completely different experiences with their veins.

There’s another wrinkle here. Varicose veins may actually be harder to see in someone carrying additional weight, even when vein disease is causing symptoms underneath the skin.

Don’t rely entirely on what your legs look like.

Pay Attention to How Your Legs Feel

Bulging veins are only one possible sign of venous insufficiency.

Maybe your legs feel heavy by late afternoon. Your ankles swell after you’ve been sitting or standing for hours. You notice aching, throbbing, itching, nighttime cramps, or restless sensations that improve when you walk or elevate your legs.

Those symptoms are worth mentioning even if you don’t see dramatic rope-like veins.

The Vein Center of Maryland uses Duplex Ultrasound to look beyond the surface and evaluate how blood is actually moving through the veins. The test can identify faulty valves and abnormal blood flow that aren’t obvious just by looking at your legs.

That gives your vein specialist something much more useful than a guess based on your weight.

Losing Weight Won’t Repair a Damaged Vein Valve

Maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and avoiding long stretches of inactivity can support circulation and overall vascular health. If you are concerned that being overweight actually is the cause of your varicose veins, losing excess weight may help.

What weight loss cannot do is make an already damaged vein valve start working normally again.

If venous insufficiency is causing persistent symptoms, treatment may still be appropriate.

Dr. Yash Kumar has more than 25 years of experience treating varicose veins, and The Vein Center of Maryland offers minimally invasive treatments including radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser treatment, VenaSeal, ClariVein, and sclerotherapy. Treatment is based on what an evaluation finds, not a number on the scale.
