Most patients are aware that colonoscopy screens for benign growths and colon cancer. However, they may not know that it is a type of endoscopy.
What’s more, a similar procedure, known as an upper endoscopy, can be used evaluate the digestive tract and assess gastrointestinal issues, such as stomach pain.

What is an Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic tool that may be used to examine the digestive tract and colon.
An upper endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure that involves inserting a flexible tube called an endoscope through the mouth, throat, and esophagus. Using an attached light and camera, the endoscope produces images of the digestive tract that are viewed on a TV monitor.
During a colonoscopy, a scope is inserted in the rectum and surveys the colon (large intestine) for signs of disease.
Surgical instruments and devices can also be passed through an endoscope to repair damage, biopsy tissue, and remove growths like colon polyps.
Why Would Someone Need This Procedure?
Treatment may be recommended for diagnostic purposes if a patient presents with stomach pain, ulcers, gastritis, or difficulty swallowing, or changes in bowel habits.
Additionally, it may be used to treat digestive tract bleeding or growths in the colon.
How is the Procedure Performed?
Dr. Kumar performs this procedure in our outpatient surgical center in Maryland. The procedure is nonsurgical, and IV sedation is used to help patients relax and remain comfortable throughout the process.
General anesthesia is rarely needed and may be warranted for complex cases.
How to Prepare for Treatment
To prepare for an upper endoscopy, patients will need to fast 6-8 hours ahead of their treatment. A colonoscopy requires the use of laxatives the day before to clear stool from the large intestine.
