Vein Skincare: How to Manage Venous Statis Dermatitis

Vein Skincare Maryland

When vein disease is chronic and progressive, it can result in painful and serious skin symptoms, including discoloration, edema, and ulcerations. If you have noticed skin changes on your legs or lower extremities, venous stasis dermatitis may be the culprit, and vein skincare can help.

Continue reading to learn what causes these vascular and dermatological issues and tips for vein skincare.

What Causes Venous Stasis Dermatitis?

Venous return from the legs to the heart and lungs is dependent on calf muscle activation and contraction around vessels. As the muscles squeeze veins, blood is propelled upwards and away from legs and lower extremities.

Women and men who are injured, disabled, or elderly are often susceptible to prolonged periods of immobility. As a result, they often experience venous stasis dermatitis and associated dermatological issues.

Vein Disease and Skin Symptoms

With venous stasis, blood pools in veins, pressure builds, and blood vessels can rupture. When this happens, iron in red blood cells may accumulate in tissue, oxidize or rust, and turn skin brown or black.

In addition to skin discoloration, venous stasis can cause swelling, ulcerations, infection, and skin thickening.

Vein Skincare Tips

There are several ways that patients and caregivers can treat and manage venous stasis dermatitis. Vein skincare tips include:

Acute venous stasis cellulitis should be treated with systemic antibiotics, dressing changes, and hydrocortisone for itching (once weeping subsides).

Mobility should also be included in the patient’s treatment plan. Mild exercise, such as walking and taking stairs, can help improve circulation and avoid venous stasis dermatitis in the future. Patients should take care to sit with their legs elevated as well.

Lastly, tubular support stockings or compression socks, layered over bandage wraps, are another way to treat and prevent vein disease and skin symptoms.
